This week in writing we had a challenge for our descriptive writing. Our challenge was to get as many points as we could using writing features. This is how we scored points.

Points system:
You will be awarded 1 point each time you add;
  • An interesting adjective (describing word)
  • A correctly placed punctuation mark.

You will be awarded 2 points if you have;
  • An opening paragraph that hooks the reader in
  • A concluding paragraph that sums up what has been described
  • A new paragraph for something you are describing

You will be awarded 5 points each time you add;
  • A simile
  • A metaphor
  • Alliteration over 3 words long (eg lovely, luscious, lemon)

You will be given bonus points for style

We got some amazing descriptions. These were some of them.

Can you work out how many points each of our super writers got?

  1. Hi Ruru, Punui-o-toka here. We really liked this idea, we might even try it one day with our writing! Miss Goslin's writing class is looking at punctuation next week so it would work out well. We like how your points system is really clear, did you guys come up with it yourself? Do you think you got better writing out of it? You are right, those descriptions are amazing! Good work.

    We love your idea of the points system. We will try that in Room 8 here at Hornby Primary School too! Your writers are so skilled at describing!
    What did the pictures you described look like?
    Thanks for sharing your learning, it helps our learning too!
